Plaque is a sticky biofilm that forms on the surface of teeth and contains large amounts of bacteria. Over time, this plaque can harden through mineralization and turn into a substance known as calculus.
Plaque and calculus act as irritants to the oral tissues. The body’s inflammatory response to these irritants can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, and eventually bone loss around the teeth, which together are known as periodontal disease.
The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, which is reversible and is typically characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced and destructive condition that results in gum deterioration, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss.
Scaling and root planing are the primary non-surgical treatments used to manage periodontal disease. Scaling involves removing plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces above and below the gum line. Root planing smooths the root surfaces and eliminates remaining deposits, helping the gums reattach more effectively.
When there is a significant buildup of plaque and calculus, local anesthesia may be used to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. Both ultrasonic (sonic) and manual instruments are used to thoroughly clean the teeth. Ultrasonic devices break down larger deposits, while hand instruments are used to remove residual calculus and refine the root surfaces.
Mild sensitivity or soreness may occur for a few days after treatment and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
A follow-up appointment with Heritage Dental Center is typically scheduled about four weeks after treatment to evaluate healing and gum health. Additional maintenance visits every 3 to 6 months may be recommended depending on the severity of the condition. The main goals of treatment are to reduce inflammation, eliminate harmful bacteria, and decrease periodontal pocket depth to help preserve the supporting bone structure around the teeth.
