Wisdom Tooth Extraction Gatineau

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last permanent teeth to develop at the back of the mouth. They typically begin to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. In some cases, there is not enough room in the jaw for these teeth to emerge properly, causing them to become impacted beneath the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to discomfort, swelling, infection, and may even affect the health and alignment of neighbouring teeth.

When is the best time to remove wisdom teeth?

Your dentist may recommend removing wisdom teeth if dental X-rays show that there is insufficient space for them to erupt correctly. Early removal can help prevent pain, infection, gum inflammation, and damage to surrounding teeth. Age is one factor when considering extraction, but the ideal timing depends on your individual oral health needs. In many cases, patients only become aware of their wisdom teeth when symptoms such as swelling or pain begin to appear.

Do all wisdom teeth have to be extracted?

Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. The decision depends on each patient's specific dental condition. If the wisdom teeth are healthy, have fully erupted, are positioned properly, function normally, and can be cleaned effectively as part of a regular oral hygiene routine, extraction may not be necessary.
